Food Facts and Trend Tidbits:
Some of the big retail food trends this year are:
-
affordability - Consumers are looking to make their food dollars go further. This means less eating out and more cooking at home. It also means consumers will be cutting back on "luxury" items and opting for more value products at the grocery store.
-
single serve packages / portion control - This food trend is really the melding of 2 trends. First consumers are trying to get smarter about eating and they are seeking out products with built in portion control. Second eating occasions are much more fragment - less family meals more one-off dinners as family member dash in and out between activities.
-
snacking and eating on the go - Grab-and-dash eating is definitely a trend that is here to stay. It fits the on the go lifestyle and the fragmented eating occasion typical in most households.
-
healthier options - We know our diets have gotten bad when French fries with ketchup are our only 2 "vegetable" servings on some days. There is a definite consumer movement or maybe it is more a backlash to change bad eating trends. Consumers want to and are at least thinking about trying to feed their bodies better - as long as it still tastes good and is totally convenient, of course!
-
organic and natural foods - Food sourcing is becoming a really hot button for consumers. Just note that even when you see these claims on package you still need to read the nutrition label and ingredient statement.
